Azuchi is located in the northern part of Gamo district, in the center of Shiga prefecture. This area includes four towns in the north (Ryuo town, Hino town, Gamo town and Azuchi town) and two cities in the south (Omihaciman city and Higashi-Omi city). In 1889 (the 22nd year of the Meiji era), basing upon the town village system enforcement, the southern part of the extant town area became Oiso town and the northern part became Azuchi town. In 1954 (the 29th year of the Showa era) both villages merged and Azuchi town was established. As of April 1st 2000 (the 12th year of the Heisei era),
Azuchi had a population of 12,519. The total area is 24.30 km2. This area once included Dainaka lake and Shonaka lake as inner lakes in Lake Biwa. However most was reclaimed by drainage in prewar days, due to a food production increase plan caused by prewar and postwar food shortage. As a result, Lake Nishi-no-ko prospers now as the largest inner lake in Lake Biwa, but remains as a small portion of former Shonaka lake.
